Healthcare personnel (HCP) are using cloth masks over their medical-grade equipment or in conjunction with face shields due to the shortage of surgical and N95 masks. In some cases, the healthcare worker can insert a filter inside them to help increase the filtration. Learn more about the guidelines when using handmade masks here>>

Materials may vary depending on the type of mask. Cotton calico or quilting fabric is the most readily available fabric. These masks are not meant to be a replacement for medical-grade equipment and need to be breathable and comfortable for the wearer during strenuous activity.

If you have masks made or are actively making masks, be sure to fill out the Volunteer form so we can contact you if there are requests in your area. Ultimately The Carolina Mask Project will end up with a variety of handmade mask covers made by individuals across the Carolinas. We are working to connect makers and artists who are sewing masks with Healthcare Personnel who need them. HCP can choose between the pleated surgical-style masks or the fitted curved masks when making a request.

Here are some notes and links to help you create your own masks to wear or donate.

This page will be updated to help reflect current information as much as possible. Contact us at the bottom of the page if you have any questions or comments or join the Carolina Mask Makers group for further discussion.

Some masks use a metal strip at the nose so the healthcare worker can better secure the mask.

You may end up making a combination of these masks depending on the materials and resources you have available. Remember to try on your prototypes and consider giving away practice masks to neighbors or friends. Adjust your pattern as needed and we thank you for your dedication!
